An integral part of Student Switch Off is carrying out halls visits - i.e. going to speak face-to-face with students about the campaign on campus! Through these visits we raise awareness of what Student Switch Off involves, ask students to pledge to save energy, and involve them in our competitons. We aim to have between 3-4 halls visits on each campus, throughout the academic year. Below is an account of the most recent halls visit taking place at Technical University of Crete (TUC). Elisavet, the TUC dorm coordinator says:
'We organized a halls visit on December 2nd to inform the residents about the Student Switch Off campaign and on ways to save energy. The visit was initially planned to be on a door-to-door basis. However, because the visit took place at around lunch time which is typically rush hour and most students are in the common areas we decided to change our approach and inform students in groups in the common areas.
During the visit posters with tips on how to save energy were also posted on announcement boards in the dorm common areas and SSO promo material, like bags, coasters and T-shirts, were handed out to students.
Our contact with the students was really good and left us with positive impressions. Some of the students knew the campaign as they had participated to it the previous years. Some of them commented on the strong motivation that the photo competition prizes (ferry ticket from/to Crete to/from Athens) were for them in engaging to them. Overall, students showed a lot of interest in the campaign and in the concept of energy saving in their dorms and are looking forward to participating more actively in it'.
